Information : ISO Certification Process
In the past, Bender Shipbuilding and Repair Company, Inc. operated under ISO 9002 guidelines and adhered to various ISO standard practices. In 2001, Bender made an aggressive commitment to become ISO 9001-2000 certified to increase its competitiveness in domestic and international shipbuilding. In June 2002, Bender received its accreditation.
In the mid-1990s, Bender Shipbuilding and Repair Company, Inc. began integrating various business elements to become more competitive in the shipbuilding industry. The company adopted many ISO 9002 guidelines and other ISO business practices, but was not certified to ISO 9001. In the early 2000s, Bender made a firm commitment to become ISO 9001-2000 certified to increase its ability to win contracts and be more competitive.
Bender had been implementing various ISO business practices, but not as fully as required for ISO 9001-2000 certification. A quality manual, quality procedures, and work instructions were not readily available to personnel who directly had an effect on products. A clearly defined Quality System needed to be put in place and monitored by the newly formed ISO management review team and ISO coordinator.
In 2001, Bender began the certification process by hiring a person to be a quality assurance inspector and ISO coordinator. Bender ensured that the ISO coordinator received the education and credentials in ISO and quality management to facilitate the certification process and compliance to the ISO standard. The ISO coordinator promoted the ISO 9001 standard internally and was able to quickly meet the requirements of ISO. Bender achieved certification in June 2002.
In the process of achieving certification, Bender implemented strong management policies to improve its previous business guidelines. These improvements have helped Bender employ a stronger, more united management team; create a structure for solving problems; increase value in international markets; and provide effective monitoring and evaluation of its quality system.
