Survey Summary
Litton Guidance and Control Systems Division (GCSD) (Now Northrop Grumman Navigation Systems Division) is part of Litton Industries' Advanced Electronic Systems Group. With headquarters in Woodland Hills, California, Litton GCSD maintains two additional facilities in Salt Lake City, Utah and Grant's Pass, Oregon. Litton GCSD is a leading worldwide producer of inertial navigation systems for military applications. Although they pioneered inertial navigation systems for high performance aircraft, today Litton GCSD's products are precise, miniaturized, reliable platforms and high -speed airborne computers that perform many missions tasks in navigation and weapon delivery. Litton GCSD systems have been applied in other fields such as aircraft, helicopter, and ship navigation; missile, Multiple Re-entry Vehicle, and torpedo guidance; weapon delivery; fire control; and air and land survey. Over one million square feet in the three facilities house 4100 employees, with 65,000 square feet devoted to super clean rooms for development and quality production of precision components.
In October 1985, Litton GCSD became the first company to host a Best Manufacturing Practices (BMP) survey. Over five years later, Litton GCSD once again took the initiative to request and endorse the first follow-up survey with the Navy's BMP Program. There have been many changes in Litton since those early BMP days, and some of those changes are based on the best practices identified in the first survey. The BMP survey team determined there were not only upgraded information items that were best practices, but many new ones of benefit to government and industry.
