Best Practice : Technical Skills Profile
Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems’ Technical Skills Profile database contains skill listings for all technical employees and retirees. Research results are focused and comprehensive. A database search can locate expertise across the sector for problem resolution, to identify individual gaps for professional development, and to identify critical skill gaps within the company.
In 2000, Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems (NGES) reorganized and updated its Technical Skills Profile Database (Oracle with PL/SQL) to reflect its technology and critical skills resources. The database contains 57 technical categories and 1,200 skills. Each skill is listed only once. The database contains skill listings for all technical employees including retired and inactive employees in case there is a need to contact and rehire special technical capability. The Technical Skills Profile Database is used to locate expertise across the sector for problem resolution, to identify individual gaps for professional development, and to identify critical skill gaps in the company.
The database searches are functionally limited to manager access. Search functions permit multi-variable searches of as many as 10 technology categories and 10 skills simultaneously. Results are focused and comprehensive and are exportable to Excel. Demographic information is also searchable and contains location, organization information, and security level.
NGES’ Technical Skills Profile Database provides a rapid and effective assimilation of newly acquired skills, the identification of experts, and the identification of core skills needed for development within NGES departments and sector.
