Information : Automated Storage and Retrieval System
(equipment: Automated Storage and Retrieval System)
Norden Systems effectively reorganized their materials inventory system in 1989 through the purchase and installation of an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS). The previous outdated part management system was unable to handle Norden's growing workload. Parts were transported from one end of the facility to another without a logical flow. The stock room was overcrowded with no room for expansion or flexibility. Realizing that organization and an accurate inventory system were critical to their manufacturing operation, Norden selected and purchased an ASRS from White Systems.
The initial system installation and personnel training was completed in March 1990. To avoid production slowdown, materials were gradually transferred from the old stock room to the new ASRS. In August 1990, the transfer was complete and the ASRS was fully implemented.
High-density carousel shelf configurations and bin heights resulted in a substantial increase in storage capacity while reducing the stockroom footprint. Part picking rates doubled and kitting accuracy improved due to system software functionality. In 1998, the system control software was updated.
