Information : Environmental Initiatives
Achieving excellence in employee health and safety protection as well as the surrounding community and the environment is considered a continuous improvement process at Norden Systems. The company has implemented aggressive and comprehensive measures to protect the environment, and these policies have received strong commitment and support from top management at Norden and corporate management. Environmental efforts were initiated several years ago with a comprehensive baseline study to identify existing and potential sources of hazardous waste and emissions. A senior management steering committee and subordinate committees were formed. These committees continue to meet regularly and report to Norden and senior management.
In addition to developing procedures, assessing compliance, and addressing environmental issues, Norden places strong emphasis on education and awareness training. Ongoing awareness training is provided in-house and through a commercial training program presented by outside support and sector support. Periodic measurements are made and internal and external audits are regularly conducted to assess improvement.
Since 1987, the company has reduced hazardous waste by 90% and eliminated all of its air emissions. Recent accomplishments include the elimination of the Product Assurance Laboratory and consolidation of the Material Laboratory which eliminates the use of its testing chemicals. Asbestos abatement continues with the downsizing and reorganizing of the facility.
Norden has eliminated the use of chlorofluorocarbons at the Norwalk, CT plant by implementing a No-Clean wave solder system for thru-hole technology and a semi-aqueous system for conformal coating. Norden is committed to going beyond basic compliance with environmental regulations by achieving the lowest levels of waste and emissions possible.
