The Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant developed a computerized inventory system with records on almost 28,000 of the approximately 100,000 documents for purchased equipment in the Plant. This system was developed after the Plant determined that the inability to find the necessary documentation was costing $500,000 a year in lost maintenance craft time. The system is easy to use and runs on an unclassified system with access through terminals. There is a help feature to locate a document if the make, model, and location of a machine is known. One key feature of the system is a record of the precise location of a document's normal storage location and a record of loans. This simple system would be particularly useful to organizations where institutional memory is being disrupted by reorganization and downsizing.
