Information : Management Information System
A key element in MagneTek Defense System’s (MDS’) strategy for continuous improvement is an integrated Management Information System (MIS). A MDS department was established to aid in the timely introduction and effective use of the information systems resources of the company. The MDS department manages how the company uses computers, software, and networks, and how information is shared. The objectives of efficient use of information systems are to provide fast response to customer inquiries and orders, reduce product costs through faster and more accurate information processing, and provide a high level of customer service and support.
A Steering Committee with members from all departments develops MDS strategy and policy. This team approach assures standardization of hardware, software, and MDS policy while addressing the requirements of a variety of users. It has provided MDS with a consistent and coordinated way to meet the changing information system needs of the company. The MDS department also manages software standardization. All departments use a program called Compass Contract by Western Data Systems. This software is specifically designed for government contractors and provides most of the required documentation and report formats.
This approach has been very effective in streamlining the company's computer aided design (CAD) capabilities. MDS was able to transition from outdated hardware to an interim VAX-based system to a PC-based CAD system without changing software vendors. Migration to a PC-based CAD system greatly improved capability and supportability and reduced cost. Another improvement is the facility-wide introduction of PCS. Many PCs are currently available, and MDS has future plans for computers throughout the facility to be linked on a Novell net.
