MagneTek Defense Systems (MDS) has maintained a strong technological base in designing, manufacturing, and marketing electrical/electronic power equipment and technology to the defense industry for several decades. Its primary focus has been on military high reliability systems applications ranging from mobile shelter frequency converters and rectifiers to shipboard degaussing systems; static inverters and converters for military aircraft, naval vessels, and mobile vehicles; equipment for generation and distribution of all types of military electrical power for data acquisition and electrical control systems; and power conversion equipment for the AEGIS weapon system. The company has not focused on developing specialized product lines; however, with declining defense budgets and a shrinking military marketplace, MDS has re-examined its future business strategy to survive and remain profitable in this changing world marketplace. This effort is supporting an emerging commitment to total quality and development of new business strategies.

Expanding business opportunities include other government products, and one such area being examined is electrical propulsion systems for transportation. MDS is also developing and entering into long term strategic alliances and teaming agreements with other companies in high- energy military areas. These alliances will help open up and gain entry to new markets. MDS is also seeking partnerships with companies with good technological concepts where it can apply its expertise in converting these concepts into producible hardware.
