Information : Project Organizational Structure
In February 1992, MagneTek Defense Systems (MDS) reorganized its manufacturing operations to allow associates more control of the work in their areas. Associates provided idea inputs during meetings with the manufacturing director, thereby providing a buy-in to the reorganization effort.
The organization is now based on project teams and work cells which has flattened the organization. Teams are established according to products and similarities between products. Three project teams are established with Team Leaders responsible for several projects. These Team Leaders provide the main interface for their teams to the director of manufacturing and are responsible for any issues pertaining to their assigned projects. Each Project Leader has a Manufacturing Engineer, Planner, Expeditor, and Cell Leader.
This new organization has presented significant benefits in improved throughput, decreased material shortages, and an ability to respond to priorities in a timely manner. Communication between associates, Project Leaders, and the manufacturing manager is enhanced.
