Best Practice : “Fantastic Friday” Recruiting Process
Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems Operations’ “Fantastic Friday” recruiting process has enhanced the company’s staff competency by ensuring a highly qualified level of candidates for employment. Those candidates selected for hire are rotated throughout the various operations departments during their 24-month leadership development program, expanding their knowledge base and exposing them to all aspects of the Raytheon culture.
Prior to 2005, Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems (IDS) Operations did not have a specific hiring process focused on selecting highly qualified employees. To assist the Center in its efforts to recruit qualified employees, a unique hiring process called “Fantastic Friday” was initiated that is headed by Human Resources with the involvement of the Operations Team. The selection process begins with a review of more than 150 applicant resumes, with the top 15- 20 candidates selected for the Friday event.
On “Fantastic Friday,” the selected candidates are invited to a networking dinner where candidates meet and interact with personnel from both Human Resources and the Operations Team. Following the networking dinner, candidates come to the Raytheon facility for a series of interviews and case studies that are intended to assess their knowledge and overall talent in problem solving in a team environment. Upon completion of the case study work, candidates present recommendations based on the problems in the case studies. A cross section of management is involved in the entire assessment process to ensure that only the most qualified candidates are selected.
Final selection is based on candidates’ leadership skills, their ability to work as a team member, and their overall problem solving skills. Management reviews each candidate’s performance based on the interview, the assessment of the case study, and the candidate’s presentation. Of the hundreds of applicants, typically only three are selected and are notified the following Monday morning.
The Raytheon hiring process is competitive, and the Fantastic Friday process provides additional applicants with management and technical skills necessary to support Raytheon’s business needs.
