Information : Material Tracking and Management System
Raytheon’s Andover Integrated Air Defense Center facility implemented a Raytheon-developed material tracking and management system to improve efficiency, reduce misplaced material, and improve productivity.
Raytheon’s Andover Integrated Defense Center (IADC) has implemented a material tracking (MTrak) and management system developed by Raytheon, replacing a former manual and labor-intensive process that did not support visibility of material location from the dock to the user. Misplaced material was becoming a growing concern to the business.
MTrak is a web-based, bar code-enabled tracking system that provides Raytheon employees self-service visibility into the movement and status of their material. When a package arrives at the dock, the carrier tracking number and the location’s drop-zone code are scanned. As the package moves through the facility, drop-zone codes continue to be scanned. This process allows the user to access the carrier’s website to track the material’s location from the time it is shipped by the vendor until it reaches the recipient. Once the package arrives at Raytheon, the user continues to track its location through MTrak. The scanners used are made by Intermec Corporation and run off a pocket PC. The docking station is directly connected to the local area network (LAN). When the scanner is docked, data is uploaded to the database through a synchronization function.
MTrak is currently used to track only non-production material, but in the future it could also be used to track production material. Future plans for the system include the user of wireless bar code scanners that will eliminate the need for docking the unit and pressing a button to synchronize the data. Data upload would be automatic.
MTrak has significantly reduced misplaced materials, eliminating non value-added searching. The Andover facility will be extending the use of this system to additional Northeast Raytheon centers in the future.
