Information : Business Continuity
Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems implemented a world-class, enterprise-wide Business Continuity plan to respond to any disaster or crisis that would interrupt normal business processes regardless of its duration. The Business Continuity plan enables Raytheon to resume normal business functions quickly and effectively, with tools and processes in place to identify risks and develop mitigation strategies aligned with business objectives and lean principles.
The 9/11 Commission recommended the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) endorse National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1600, the “Standard on Disaster/Emergency Management and Business Continuity Programs” as a national preparedness standard. Recent natural disasters have further reinforced the need to implement a plan that will protect key corporate and national assets. Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems (IDS) has instituted an all-encompassing Business Continuity Plan designed to provide enterprise-wide readiness and coordination, business- level preparedness, and local emergency management coordination to respond to any business interruption whether it is of short duration or the worst possible natural disaster or terrorist attack.
The planning process was designed to ensure that the organization can survive catastrophic events that can interrupt normal business processes and is based on world-class best practices that include risk prevention and mitigation, business interruption impact analysis, and response restoration and recovery plans. Raytheon Six Sigma™ (R6σ) and lean principles support the business continuity efforts and risk mitigation process, e.g., reduced lead-times and cycle times decrease the recovery time; Work Place Organization (WPO) and 5s create an environment of greater safety and provide the ability to more quickly assess damage; and reduced work-in-process (WIP) inventories minimize the risk from a physical disruption.
To support its Business Continuity Plan, Raytheon IDS incorporates industry standards and some leading-edge tools that include:
Dialogic Communications for notifying employees of events/contingencies. This item provides the ability to call 1500 employees per hour.
Web Emergency Operations Center (EOC) – a web-based tool that provides centralized, digital incident management and chat and Instant Messaging capabilities. This system also has interactive mapping capability to enhance situational awareness.
Living Disaster Recovery Planning System (LDRPS) – an additional web-based tool that serves as a central repository for Business Continuity plans and data. The LDRPS stores dictionaries and maintains information that is updated weekly from other primary source systems for employees and vendors.
Raytheon’s Business Continuity Plan for risk management and mitigation in the event of natural or man-made disasters provides an advantage over major contractors who must rely on sole source external and internal sources for risk management solutions. The implementation of this plan will ensure that Raytheon can effectively resume operations after a disaster.
