Rock Island Arsenal (RIA) is on the highway of electronic data interchange for communicating and rapidly responding to customer requirements. This is performed by using file transfer protocol (ftp)/internet, e-mail attachments, and translating neutral files such as Initial Graphics Exchange Specifications, Data Exchange Format, and STandard for the Exchange of Product model data Application Protocol 203 to and from proprietary CAD/CAM files.
With the use of neutral files, RIA is capable of supporting customers, and has been able to manufacture quality products and models without formal drawings by establishing best practices with the customer and translating specification data into CAD/CAM. This proven practice embraces teaming concepts and reduces lead time, as evidenced by comments on customer surveys.
