A connector manufacturer contacted the Electronics Manufacturing Productivity Facility (EMPF) for assistance in determining the cause and solution of a solderability problem they were experiencing with connectors they manufactured. These connectors were failing the visual inspection solderability tests stated in MIL-STD-202, Method 208. One of the connectors sent to the EMPF had been steam aged for 8 hours while the other had not. The objective of the study was to determine the cause of the solderability problem and to provide a solution for reworking the connectors already manufactured.
