The intra-system electromagnetic environment consists of all the sources
within the airborne weapon system and includes both functional and incidental
As equipment designers strive to meet the E3 requirements of each
individual Line Replaceable Unit (LRU), the integration engineers must consider
the impact of the placement of each LRU within the system to protect for
electromagnetic interaction between equipment or subsystems.
While the inter-system environment primarily determines the requirements for
cable shielding, intra-system interference concerns drive the requirements for
cable type, cable categorization, separation and routing, and influences
shielding requirements. Because cable shielding materials are extremely heavy,
shields should not be used on aircraft when alterative solutions, such as cable
categorization and separation, are possible.
