Program management needs to be aware of the tradeoffs involved in
specifying input power so that system requirements can be met without placing
an excessive burden upon the power supply. There has been a trend to require
individual equipment to operate from a large variety of power sources. This
has increased the complexity of the design, making the objectives of increased
output power density and reliability more difficult to achieve while
dissipating investment monies and highly skilled manpower resources.
The following section discusses the tradeoffs involved from the viewpoints
of the provider of electrical power and the user of electrical power.
Shipboard only, aircraft only, single- and multi-platform considerations and
noninterruptible power are discussed.
