and configuration management.
The battery specification is the primary document of
configuration definition and is usually prepared in accordance with
MIL-STD-490 or MIL-STD-961. Performance specifications are the preferred
method of documenting most battery designs because they allow for maximum
design flexibility, innovation, and technology insertion as well as
competition. In instances where battery designs must be completely defined,
avoid the use of proprietary parts or processes.
Once the battery system has been defined, it is placed
under Configuration Management. Establishing a Configuration Management
operation involves careful selection of configuration items, establishment of
a data base, reporting system, and maintenance of a well defined baseline with
rigorous, formal review, and approval of changes. This ensures that changes to
the baseline are properly reviewed prior to implementation. (See Section
